- TONTISEFrench term for the loose threads shorn from the face of wool fabrics. Also the rugs made of such clippings, first made at Rouen, France, about 1715 to 1719. The clippings were applied to a strong fabric by means of various oils. Designs were formed by dyeing the fibres in various colours.
